Most auto glass calls start the same way. Something hit the windshield on I-96, there is a star in the glass the size of a thumbnail, and the question is whether it matters. Usually it matters more than people think, and costs less than they fear.

- A real answer on repair versus replace. A repairable chip gets repaired. Nobody should be selling you a windshield you do not need, and there is no version of this job where guessing over the phone is better than looking at a photo.

- A number before the work, not after. Whether it goes through insurance or comes out of your pocket, you hear the figure first.

Insurance or out of pocket
Both are normal here, and Michigan has more out-of-pocket drivers than most states because premiums are what they are.

There is a persistent claim on Michigan auto glass websites that state law gives you a free windshield. It does not. Michigan has no zero-deductible glass mandate — that is Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina. What Michigan has is insurers who prefer a cheap repair to an expensive replacement, plus optional glass endorsements some policies carry. The practical outcome is often the same. The reason matters, because a shop that will tell you something convenient and untrue about your policy will tell you something convenient and untrue about your glass.
Straight talk on the parts nobody mentions
“Is aftermarket glass worse?” Usually not, and sometimes it comes off the same line as the original. Where it genuinely matters is on vehicles with a camera, a heated wiper park, an acoustic interlayer or a heads-up display — get the wrong glass and something stops working properly. Ask which is going in and why.
“Can I drive it straight away?” No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. The adhesive has a safe drive-away time that depends on the product and the temperature. Cold and damp lengthen it. The windshield is a structural part of the car in a rollover and it holds the passenger airbag in place, so this is not a formality.
“Why is my quote so much higher than my neighbour’s?” Almost always what is mounted behind the glass. Rain sensors, humidity sensors, heating elements, acoustic layers, HUD projection and camera brackets all change the part. Two identical-looking sedans can differ by hundreds of dollars for reasons neither owner can see.
“The other quote included calibration for free.” Then either it is priced in elsewhere, or it is not being done properly. Calibration takes time, space and equipment. Free is a pricing decision, not a technical one, and it is worth knowing which you are getting.
Common questions
Can this chip be repaired, or does the whole windshield have to go?
The rough rule is size, depth and position. A chip smaller than a quarter, not directly in your line of sight, and not touching the edge of the glass is usually repairable. A crack longer than a dollar bill usually is not. Position matters as much as size: a repair leaves slight distortion, and directly in the driver's view that is worse than the chip was. Send a photo and you will get a straight answer before anyone drives out.
How long can I leave a chip before it becomes a crack?
In Michigan, less time than you think. A chip holds moisture, the temperature swings below freezing overnight, the water expands, and the chip runs. A stone chip taken in November is a repair. The same chip in January is a windshield. If you are going to deal with it, deal with it before the first hard freeze.
I do not have comprehensive coverage. What does this actually cost?
You pay out of pocket, and you should get the number before anyone touches the car. Chip repairs are cheap enough that they are rarely worth a claim anyway. A replacement varies a lot by vehicle, mostly because of what is mounted behind the glass, so a real number needs your year, make, model and trim. Ask on the first call and you will get one.
My car has lane assist. Does that change anything?
Yes, and it is the part shops most often skip. The camera that runs lane keeping and automatic braking looks through the windshield. Move the glass and the camera needs recalibrating, or those systems are aiming at a world slightly to the left of the real one. It is not an upsell, it is the second half of the job.
Do you come to me, or do I come to you?
We come to you, at home or at work, which for most jobs is the whole point. The exception is weather. Urethane adhesive has a temperature range, and a Michigan January in an open parking lot is outside it. When it is too cold or too wet to bond properly, that gets said out loud rather than worked around.
